The Olive glitch is a natural glitch which occurs in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. This glitch allows the player to harmlessly trap one of their Pokémon into the inflatable olive at the Olive Roll grounds in South Province (Area 2) just to the north of Cortondo. By doing so, the player can move around with the inflatable olive following them or with the inflatable olive erratically moving and gaining height within the grounds.

This glitch takes advantage of the Let's Go feature in the Paldea games. The results vary depending on the collision model, species of the Pokémon, and occasionally the position of the inflatable olive.

Explanation

When the Let's Go feature is used by pressing the R Button, the player's lead Pokémon is sent out a fixed distance away from the player, before moving in that direction. This distance varies depending on the species of Pokémon.

The inside of the inflatable olive is not a solid object. The interior is made up of a non-textured surface that Pokémon can interact with as they can with the textured outside surface.

To cause the glitch, the player can simply face the inflatable and position themselves so that the spot where their lead Pokémon will be sent out is at the spot of the olive. Depending on the distance and the Pokémon used, it might be very simple to trap the Pokémon used or be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Smaller Pokémon appear to have a much easier time with spawning inside the interior of the olive.

Once a Pokémon is trapped, the olive will start moving on its own or will stay stationary.

To free the Pokémon, the R or ZR Button can be used to free the Pokémon; the R Button will cause the Pokémon to respawn in the direction the player is facing while the ZR Button will return the Pokémon to its Poké Ball. Additionally the Pokémon can be freed by: Having the olive enter a basket, having the olive go past the fenced area, or by moving far enough away from the olive.

Effects

When using a Pokémon with a grounded model, such as Diglett, the olive will stay grounded and move towards the player at a far enough distance. This behavior can also occur with the models of Pokémon that are mostly grounded, such as Magikarp.

When using a Pokémon that flies or swims around with a small collision model, such as Fletchinder and Finneon, the olive will fly around the grounds and move towards the player. The player can lead the olive around by walking ahead of it. Flying Pokémon with larger collision models, such as Wingull, will cause the olive to move erratically as the collision models of the olive and the large flying Pokémon continually interact.

When using a Pokémon that is humanoid shaped, such as Kirlia, the olive will move around wildly. The Pokémon inside can cause the olive to start moving through the air above the player as the collision of the Pokémon and olive overlap. Some Pokémon will only have this happen as the player moves away from the olive. These Pokémon will generally be able to escape the olive with enough time as the models eventually force the other out of its space. Humanoid Pokémon with wider models, like Tinkatuff with its hammer, can cause the game to lag if done while the olive is standing upright on the base at the center of the grounds. When elsewhere within the grounds, the olive will move violently enough to force the Pokémon out, usually within seconds. If a Pokémon is airborne when it is forced out, it will fall in place towards the ground.

When using Pokémon with both large and tall models, such as Espathra, it will be extremely difficult to get them inside the olive, if not impossible. Should the player succeed, the Pokémon will likely be forced out within a second or will cause the game to face extreme lag should the olive be on the base.
