Stealing other Trainer's Pokémon (Red/Green)

Please note that this glitch only exists in the Japanese versions of the game, or is otherwise a glitch
from a Pokémon game which was only released in Japan.

Using the Select glitch, it is possible to steal other Trainer's Pokémon in Pokémon Red and Green. This glitch requires the expanded inventory, which can be achieved with another Select glitch or dry underflow glitch.

Steps

  1. (Press Select on item 33, exit with B, enter battle)/(Press Select on item 33 in battle, exit with B)
  2. On the Fight menu, press Select to swap with a move with 1 PP.
  3. Throw a Ball, such as the Master Ball to catch the Pokémon.

This glitch works by touching 0xD034; the 'is out of battle/wild battle/Trainer?' address; replacing it with 1 (wild battle). If the player defeats at least one enemy Pokémon, they may steal a Pokémon not in the enemy's slot 1, too.

The glitch can be combined with Roster modification (Red/Green).

Notes

It is currently unknown whether this is exclusive to the v1.0 release (which allows for performing a Select glitch solely from battle without having to carry forward the selection from out of battle).
