hi

Hi! I'm ChainSwordCS. You can find me on YouTube, my website, and some other places if you look hard enough. I like game preservation, archival, and documentation. I also mainly do stuff in Pokemon Yellow (EN).

slightly bad writeups that may not quite fit on wiki articles yet

female symbol sprite decompression effects

The glitch Pokemon ♀ . in English Pokemon Yellow is an interesting one.

On all consoles (DMG,CGB,SGB) its sprite is capable of causing game crashes and other strange effects due to a buffer overflow during sprite decompression.

What happens then? Well, some corruptions can happen. It can affect sprites and OAM (as is common with Yellow Missingno), but it can also go beyond that and corrupt more of the address space. I don't know exactly what's happening in this scenario. Maybe it has to do with sound, or maybe due to a glitch textbox (but I personally find that less likely in this case).

Save States

You can load the save state over and over again, and different things happen each time. Sometimes the game crashes, sometimes it's a glitch symphony, sometimes it continues running without a hitch. So whatever is happening is very very likely affected by VRAM Inaccessibility.

From my experience, I only recall it happening sometimes when encountering a wild Weepinbell in Cerulean Cave (which is a 10% encounter rate on 1F by the way).

What does it sound like? Here are some examples:
