The '''black box cartridge fault''' is a type of [[cartridge fault]] [[glitch]] in the Game Boy Pokémon games.

Due to a damaged or incorrectly read Game Pak, the game may display black boxes in place of Pokémon sprites.

==Cause==
According to Mk Km, this is believed to be caused due to a damaged memory bank controller and the fact that no memory bank controller means SRAM on the cartridge (where the sprite buffer is located), meaning all sprite data is returned with FF bytes.
