The glitch in Japanese Green

The black box cartridge fault is a type of cartridge fault glitch in the Game Boy Pokémon games.

Due to a damaged or incorrectly read Game Pak, the game may display black boxes in place of Pokémon sprites.

Cause

According to Mk Km, this is believed to be caused due to a damaged memory bank controller and the fact that no memory bank controller means SRAM on the cartridge (where the sprite buffer is located), meaning all sprite data is returned with FF bytes.
