The black box cartridge fault is a type of cartridge fault glitch in the Game Boy Pokémon games.
Due to a damaged or incorrectly read Game Pak, the game may display black boxes in place of Pokémon sprites.
Cause
According to Mk Km, this is believed to be caused due to a damaged memory bank controller and the fact that no memory bank controller means SRAM on the cartridge (where the sprite buffer is located).
