The Bug-Catching Contest data copy glitch allows you to make anya [[Unstable hybrid Pokémon|hybrid]] between the second party Pokémon and the sixth party Pokémon. So it is possible to merge a Pokémon to have the same DVs, gender, moveset and stats ofas another; useful for creating new Shinies between the Red Gyarados if the new hybrid Pokémon can be stabilised through evolution.
It is a rare example of a glitch which only exists within the Japanese versions of Pokémon Gold and Silver. It was later fixed in other localizations of Pokémon Gold and Silver and it does not exist at all in {{C}}.

It is possible to get a [[Unstable hybrid Pokémon|hybrid]] between party Pokémon 2 and a [[GlitchDexJP/GS:000|????? (0x00)]] if no Pokémon was ever present in the sixth slot of the party. Taking it in and out of the Day Care converts it into a non-hybrid ????? (0x00) which can be used for [[????? party overloading]]. So this in turn can be used to set up glitches such as [[Celebi Egg glitch]] and [[duplicate key items glitch]] (for access of [[wrong pocket TMs and HMs]] or [[glitch Pokédex sorting]]s/bag corruption and [[arbitrary code execution]]).
