The Bug-Catching Contest data copy glitch allows you to make a [[Unstable hybrid Pokémon|hybrid]] between the second party Pokémon and the sixth party Pokémon. So it is possible to merge a Pokémon to have the same DVs, gender, moveset and stats as another (similar to the [[Pokémon merge glitch]] also found in Generation I). This is useful for creating new Shinies between the Red Gyarados and another Pokémon, if the new hybrid Pokémon can be stabilised through evolution.
It is a rare example of a glitch which only exists within the Japanese versions of Pokémon Gold and Silver. It was later fixed in other localizations of Pokémon Gold and Silver and it does not exist at all in {{C}}.
