A Moon Stone providing the Choice item lockout dialog in Generation VI

The Choice item lock glitch is a natural glitch, and recurring glitch which occurs in Generations V, VI and VII of the core Pokémon games.

Summary

The glitch restricts a player's Pokémon from using choice items (Choice Band, Choice Specs, Choice Scarf) even when it is not holding a choice item. Afterwards, following the end of a held item effect, messages may appear such as "The <HELD ITEM> only allows the use of <MOVE>!" or "The <HELD ITEM> allows the use of only <MOVE>!" in (Generation V) in which "<HELD ITEM>" is the current held item. In Generation V, the latter message may also occur if the Pokémon is holding no held item, but it will be referred to as an item called "None" instead.

Furthermore, in Generation VII the glitch works slightly differently, allowing other moves to be chosen for the turn, but causing them to fail.

In order to activate this glitch, the player must have its choice item removed after the lock-in effects have already occurred with the effects of the held item negated by an ability or move including Klutz, Embargo or Magic Room.
