Evolve without an evolutionary stone: Difference between revisions

Certain glitch Pokémon evolve by "exposure to an item" that isn't an evolutionary stone. Others may evolve with a valid stone, but only through this glitch and not through the actual item. An example is the glitch Pokémon [[GlitchDex/RB:207|O PkMn4 X]], which can evolve at level 6 or more when using this glitch with Exeggutor (corresponding to Moon Stone).

The reason why the actual item won't work is that when evolving a Pokémon using an evolutionary stone or by trade, a flag is set to suppress evolution through level (and also to disallow the player to cancel the evolution by pressing B). When that flag is set, and when the game sees any entry in the evolution table that isn't "by item" or "by trade", it will immediately stop scanning through the table. For glitch Pokémon, their evolution table usually have several invalid entries before any valid entry, making evolution using an evolutionary stone or by trade impossible. <!-- In theory, a glitch Pokémon that happens to evolve by "exposure to its own species" should be able to evolve by eating a rare candy, but I don't know if such a circumstance can exist without hacking. -->
