Main article:Select bugs
This glitch involves the player using select to switch the 32nd item (13th in his or her PC) with the fifth Pokémon in the party. In the data structure of the Generation I Pokémon games any data for an interface outside of the normal range such as a 'seventh Pokémon' in the party will actually correspond to other data within the game. When the player is switching an item with a Pokémon he or she is essentially switching the information of other 'cHunks' of data in the game because the game will attempt to manage a Pokémon with the data of an item (i.e. one past how many Pokémon the player has).

This glitch is an example of one of these select bugs and switches the data of the fossil Pokémon with another value, based on what item was switched from the 32nd item slot. None of these glitches exist in the English versions of the games because the feature to switch Pokémon with the select button was removed.
