The GTS filter glitch was a Global Trade System glitch in the initial version of XY. As it is required to update the game to the latest version to use its online features, this glitch no longer occurs.
This glitch is triggered in the generation VI games in the GTS.

This glitch could be replicated by entering the GTS, and applying a filter to narrow down requests to Pokémon that the player has. Once a trade is requested, the game would display the message, "A communication error has occurred. Press the Power button, and end the game."
This is one of a few glitches to have been addressed by Nintendo.

Method
Nintendo released a patch for the game (version 1.1), fixing both this issue and the Lumiose City save glitch.
In order to trigger the glitch, the game must not yet patched to version 1.1. The player must enter the GTS, and apply a filter to narrow down requests to Pokémon that the player has. Once a trade is initiated, the game will display the message, "A communication error has occurred. Press the Power button, and end the game."

Cause
When the filter is applied, the game fails to initialize trade data to prepare for a possible trade during the refresh. This causes it to assume that the Pokémon does not exist, and as a result triggers the error.

Nintendo's Response
Nintendo released a patch for the game, fixing both this issue and the Lumiose City Save Bug.
