The instant victory effect is a glitch effect in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal.
In these versions, entering a battle will immediately end it.
There are two types of automatic win scenarios; first if the player's party Pokémon count is 0, and second if the party Pokémon count is not 0, but there are no possible Pokémon on the field.
Previously a cheat only effect, the glitch is possible with ????? party overloading or arbitrary code execution.
Setup and sub-glitches
Obtaining a ????? (FF) will allow for the player to obtain an empty party, if they faint all Pokémon in the party after it and then faint ????? (FF). This prevents the Pokémon Center healing effect from working, leaving the player with an empty party.
Additionally, there is a sub-glitch known as the Trainer grass displacement glitch, in which the player can battle a Trainer in the grass, and access glitch dialog as their victory speech.
