The Safari Zone gate in the dark

The Play the Safari Zone in the dark glitch is a glitch in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Summary

If the Safari Zone exit glitch is performed in Rock Tunnel, the darkness effect will temporarily persist. (A poisoned Pokémon or the move Fly, Dig or Teleport is needed to safely escape the resulting Glitch City.)

Steps

1) Perform the Safari Zone exit glitch (enter the Safari Zone, exit and choose 'No' when prompted on the "leaving early?" query. Save the game and reset, exit and choose 'No' on the "join the hunt?" query.

2) Walk around in Rock Tunnel (without Flash), until you run out of Safari Zone steps. You will return to the Safari Zone entrance, but in the dark.

3) You can play one Safari Zone game in the dark, but leaving the Safari Zone in any way removes the darkness.

The current color attribution of the map, is determined by controlled by memory address D35D (D35C in Pokémon Yellow) including 'cave darkness', which involves a D35D/D35C value of hex:06. This is represented by item 33 in the expanded items pack, which can be obtained with various glitches such as dry underflow glitch.

For this reason, it is possible to play the Safari Zone in different color tints in ways that would not be possible with the available start-up (CGB; Color-Game-Boy bootstrap ROM) settings.
