Sonic the Hedgehog is a platform game for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive from the popular Sonic the Hedgehog series by Sega and the first Sonic the Hedgehog game. It gained a sequel known as Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Missing percussion glitch

The missing percussion glitch is a glitch that occurs in the Mega Drive/Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog. The sound driver fails to load the drum samples for the music playing, due to the fade in routine after collecting an extra life.

Requirements

  1. The player must gain an extra life.

Procedure

  1. The player must quickly pause the game after the extra life jingle is done playing, and just before the music fades back in.

Notes

If the glitch is performed in the Special Stage, FM Channel 6 is disabled instead since this track has no percussion. The game doesn't need to be paused while performing the glitch while in the Special Stage, after gaining a life FM Channel 6 gets disabled. This glitch will not work in the Sonic Mega Collection port, and is the only version of the game that the glitch will not work in.

Missing PRESS START BUTTON text glitch

The Missing PRESS START BUTTON text glitch is a glitch that occurs in the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog. The "PRESS START BUTTON" text that appears on the title screen in early prototype screenshots never appears in the final game, unless it is hacked.

Explanation

The glitch occurs because RAM isn't properly cleared, the byte that allows the text to be shown is shared with the two previous screens before the Title Screen and therefore the value is stuck in a no call state, rendering the text to never show up. A more thorough technical explanation of the glitch and fix can be found in this topic from Sonic Retro.(see here)
