This article is about the placeholderlocation term for a map which is displayed on the Town Map asname "SPECIAL",. forFor other uses for non-glitch and non-beta elements such as the Special stat please see Bulbapedia's disambiguation page.

SPECIAL is placeholder text in GSC that appears as a Pokégear map name for when the player is in the second floor of a Pokémon Center but the last map in memory (to be loaded when the player goes down the stairs) is the second floor of the Pokémon Center itself. <!--Does this apply to the Pokémon Center trade and battle rooms as well?-->
This article is about the placeholder term for a map which is displayed on the Town Map as "SPECIAL", for other uses for non-glitch and non-beta elements such as the Special stat please see Bulbapedia's disambiguation page.

The index number of "SPECIAL" is 00 in the Pokégear map. According to the Pokégear map, "SPECIAL" is set in Johto, and its coordinates are off the map.

The second floor of a Pokémon Center is in actuality a single map<!--Although individual 2F maps apparently exist! http://hax.iimarck.us/topic/176/-->, and the Pokégear map takes the name for this map from the last place that the player visited, such as "CHERRYGROVE CITY" for Cherrygrove City's Pokémon Center 1F as the last location, "GOLDENROD CITY" for Goldenrod City's Pokémon Center 1F and so on.
The term 'SPECIAL' is the name for locations with an identifier of 0 on the Pokégear's Town Map section in Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver and Pokémon Crystal. It is presumably a placeholder and not a pure coincidence as supported by the fact that the same locations are later referred to as "Special Area" on Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire and Pokémon Emerald and much later as one of many varients of the Mystery Zones on Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

"SPECIAL" also appears as the last entry in a location list dumped in a Pokémon Crystal text dump with two entries that may be unused, N/A and "POKéMON MANSION".
The term is also likely to have been left behind from Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow as Pokémon Gold and Silver originally used the same engine, as was the case with the message "You missed the Pokémon".

Curiously, SPECIAL shares its name with the Special stat from RBY; games that GSC were built on.
