The message "This Game Pak is designed only for use on the Game Boy Color." is an error trap which exists in various GameBoy Color games, including Pokémon Crystal. Its purpose, is to prevent players from playing Pokémon Crystal or the another game on the Super Gameboy if they are incompatible with it. As a result, this error trap successfully blocks any game freezes or glitchy effects which may happen from doing so. This message might also exist to stop piracy, however this is uncomfirmed.

For a few titles such as Chee-Chai Alien, which requires the Game Boy Color's infrared port, a message like this appears when playing the game on a Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP or Game Boy Player as well.
Many glitches which would usually cause a Glitch Dimension on Pokémon Gold and Silver, will instead display the "This Game Pak is designed only for use on the Game Boy Color." message in Pokémon Crysta.

Relevant Pokémon titles include Pokémon Crystal, and the Korean version of Pokémon Gold and Silver; these can only be played on a Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP or Game Boy Player.

The message appears after causing a Glitch Dimension in the relevant Game Boy Color game, because for the game to try to execute the game in Game Boy Color mode the register 'a' must be 11 on start up, but it no longer is after an unexpected reset. See the Glitch Dimension article for more information.

The Game Boy color only message appearing normally.

"This Game Pak is designed only for use on the Game Boy Color." (Japanese: このカートリッジは ゲームボーイカラー せんようです。 ゲームボーイカラーでしょうしてください。), as seen in Pokémon Crystal, and other messages are error trapping screens that appear in Game Boy games that are only compatible with the Game Boy Color when they are played on a regular Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light or Super Game Boy.

For a few titles such as Chee-Chai Alien, which requires the Game Boy Color's infrared port, a message like this appears when playing the game on a Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP or Game Boy Player as well.
