===What causes Glitch City?===
The glitch is the result of a mismatched warp.

Invisible objects called "warps" allow the player to move between two locations. Doors, cave entrances, staircases, and ladders do not change the player's location; the invisible warps placed over such items do all the work. A warp can lead to any warp in any map (including, in theory, itself), but it can only lead to another warp.

When a player exits the Safari Zone gatehouse using the south entrance, they are passing through a warp. This warp is programmed to take the player to warp $04 (the fifth warp, because warp 0 counts as a valid warp) in the (non-Safari-Zone) map they were previously in. When no glitches occur, that map is invariably Fuchsia City, and warp $04 in Fuchsia City is the door to the Safari Zone gatehouse.


All Glitch Cities except for Pokémon Yellow's [[Pokémon Yellow map 254|map 254]] are not actual glitch maps; but rather a temporarily corrupted version of an existing map.
However, when a player performs the glitch, they change the map. They aren't in the Safari Zone when the P.A. sounds, so they don't end up in Safari Zone when they leave the gatehouse. When they leave the gatehouse, they are taken to warp $04 of whatever map they were in when the P.A. sounded.


This can be proven by viewing the memory address D35E (D35D) in Yellow, and looking up the value [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_locations_by_index_number_(GB) here]. Additionally, when a player checks the Town Map while in a Glitch City, the map says that they are in the source map.
The problem is that not all maps ''have'' a warp $04. In particular, Cycling Road only has two <!--does this count warp 0---> , as does the Cinnibar Island Coast <!--probably supposed to mean Sea Route 20--->. So when the player makes the P.A. sound on those maps, and when the player then exits the Safari Zone gatehouse, they trick the game into taking them to a warp that doesn't exist.


Also, attributes of the source map are preserved. The Cycling Road Glitch City forces the player to move downward, in the same manner that the Cycling Road itself does. The tileset of the map is the same as the source map. The sizes of the map are preserved as well.
As with many other anomalies, the first generation of Pokemon games had no measures in place to prevent things like this from happening. The result is that the part of the game engine responsible for handling maps and warps gets completely tripped up by the error, and fails to produce the proper map. The player ends up in a heavily corrupted version of the map they were in when the P.A. sounded. The Glitch City is a corrupted map, and the map that the player was in when the P.A. sounded is the "source" map.


Wild Pokemon are also preserved; if the source map had wild Pokémon data, then those Pokemon will appear when Surfing in Glitch City. If the Glitch City had a 'left-facing strait tile', it is possible to perform the [[Old Man Trick]] or [[Previous wild Pokémon list glitch]] with it. This is possible with the Sea Route 19 Glitch City, and it means that [[Missingno.]] can be made to appear in a Glitch City.

One of the bigger changes is the usual lack of map links. Map links connect two "adjacent" maps, allowing a player to walk off the edge of one map and onto the edge of another. As an example, Pallet Town and Route 1 are connected with a map link. If that map link didn't exist, then the game would have no idea that the two maps are connected, and walking out of Pallet Town's northern exit would crash the game (because the player would be outside of the map).


Basically, this means that initially going west too much counts as taking the player to the east connection hex:64 (Sea Route 19) and going right too much counts as taking the player to the west connection hex:FF (Cinnabar Island), but when a connection happens the player's coordinates are updated like normal (e.g. going to the hex:64 connection makes the player's new x coordinate 00 because this is the minimum x coordinate for Sea Route 19). As FF is a west connection to get to Sea Route 20, going one more step west takes the player back to Sea Route 20, due to the byte 'underflow' from 00 to FF.
Such map links are ignored when the game loads most Glitch Cities. If, for example, a player is in the Cinnibar Island Coast Glitch City, and they head west (to where Cinnibar Island ''should'' be), the game will crash, because the map link (which didn't load) was the only thing stopping them from walking outside of the map.

Glitch City in Generation I (known in Japan rarely as バグった町, Bug Town or Bug City) is a generic term used to describe an 'area' which is a glitchy mess of tiles. These are technically generated using an existing location on most circumstances.

Glitch Cities can be accessed with the Safari Zone exit glitch, either through the 'traditional' method or the poison method (but the poison method does not work in Yellow). A Glitch City can also be accessed with the Silph Co. PC glitch.

A Glitch City can also be accessed when walking down beyond a y-coordinate map boundary by changing the memory address D361. For example, if the y position on Route 1 is set to 37 (hex:25) when it was 35 (hex:23), walking down will eventually cause a Glitch City to appear (ignoring tiles possibly blocking the player without walk through walls).

Specific Glitch Cities

Glitch City (Go to: Sea Route 20) Glitch City is fairly navigable compared to other 'regions'. Do not try to cut down any trees or enter any caves - trees regenerate, and caves do not work. Entering the nearest one causes you to get trapped.

Glitch Mountain (Go to: Cycling Road) Glitch Mountain is also fairly navigable. Like in Cycling Road, your character is constantly moving downhill. Because of this, you cannot Surf on any of the blocks of water.

Glitch League (Go to: Indigo Plateau or Route 23) Glitch League is not as easily navigable as Glitch City or Glitch Mountain. You can only move around a very small area, but you can see pieces of statues, water, and all kinds of other stuff.

Traits of Safari Zone exit glitch Glitch Cities

Glitch Cities accessed through the Safari Zone exit glitch happen when the game places the player for 'exit point hex:04'.
