A recurring problem exists within Nintendo's control-stick based consoles and has not been solved as of the original Nintendo Wii, as many games support use of either the Nunchuck, Classic Controller or GameCube pad. The problem is caused when the player turns the power of the console on, whilst holding the control-stick so that it stays until released in a certain position, other than the neutral position (the centre of the control-stick).

When the game is loaded, the console will take the direction that the player was initially pushing the control-stick as the new neutral position. As a result, the game will perform any processes concerned with the player moving the joystick in that direction. This is one of several hardware/software glitches acknowledged by Nintendo.

How to solve the problem

  1. The player can pause the game and carefully remove the game controller and reconnect it again. Whilst doing this, he or she should ensure that the joystick has returned to its normal neutral position.
  2. The player can simply turn the console off and back on again with the joystick in its normal neutral position.
  3. On the Nintendo Gamecube, the player can use an in-built neutral position reset. He or she should hold the X, Y, and Start buttons simultaneously for three seconds during game play, whilst not touching the control-stick.

Exploitation of the glitch

  1. In Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD, players frequently change the neutral controller position to another direction, so that the main character is moving. He or she may exploit this by having a Shadow Pokémon, or a Pokémon which evolves by happiness in his or her party so that its happiness will increase whilst walking whilst the player needs to put less input into the controller. The problem can be exploited so that the player does not have to put any input into the controller at all, by moving into an irregularly angled wall.
