'''Evolving Raichu''' is a famous text error in {{RB}} where an in-game trade NPC claims that the Raichu the player traded to him "went and evolved". A special feature of this text error is that the dialogue line in question is not a single hardcoded piece of text, but a text template used for multiple in-game trade NPCs, which is presumably why this error was not discovered in development.
This glitch is simply when a man in Cinnabar Island's Pokémon Laboratory requests a Raichu in exchange for Electrode, but claims that Raichu evolved after the trade.

== Why it happens ==
This error happened in localization: English {{RB}} took its in-game trade data from Japanese {{RG}}, but the text templates<ref>[https://github.com/pret/pokered/blob/6c945a6b6a0d21ba4bf0c2977bb44d2482dffcb8/data/text/text_7.asm#L140 This specific text template] corresponds to <code>TRADE_DIALOGSET_POLITE</code> in [https://github.com/pret/pokered/blob/6c945a6b6a0d21ba4bf0c2977bb44d2482dffcb8/data/events/trades.asm this table].</ref> of in-game trade NPCs were translated from {{JB}}. In Japanese Red and Green, none of the Pokémon the player can trade to an NPC would evolve by trading, and thus this text template says something unrelated to evolution. On the other hand, in Japanese Blue, for the two in-game trades using this text template, the player needs to trade in a Kadabra (for this one) and a Haunter (for the other one) respectively, both of which would evolve by trading, so the NPC claiming that they "went and evolved" is appropriate (and may serve as a hint at the game mechanic).<ref>[http://www.math.miami.edu/~jam/azure/forum/buzz/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000207 Who's that <nowiki>[Traded]</nowiki> Pokémon?] by Meowth346, the Azure Heights forum</ref>
This is a translation error on the part of Nintendo and Game Freak. Meowth346 posted [http://www.math.miami.edu/~jam/azure/forum/buzz/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000207 this explanation] on the Azure Heights forum:

"Also, the guy who says that "Raichu" went and evolved, I figured out that (though I don't know if anyone mentioned this earlier) the text was based on Japanese Blue, where you trade a Kadabra. In the Red version, you trade a Raichu...
It was basically something like this:

'''Japanese Red:'''

Trade Raichu for Electrode.
Guy responds about his Raichu.

'''Japanese Green:'''

Trade Raichu for Electrode.
Guy responds about his Raichu.

Incidentally, for the other in-game trade using this text template, the player trades in a Poliwhirl for a Jynx, and the NPC will similarly claim that the Poliwhirl "went and evolved". Since the intention of this line in Japanese Blue is likely to hint at the game mechanic, this can also be considered an error<ref>[https://www.moviemistakes.com/game6856/factual Pokemon: Red and Blue factual errors]</ref>, albeit a more ambiguous one since Poliwhirl can evolve to Poliwrath (when exposed to a Water Stone).
'''Japanese Blue'''

== Trivia ==
Trade Kadabra for whoever.
*According to Yomiuri Shimbun, Raichu was once in fact originally intended to evolve into a Pokémon known as "Gorochu" with fangs and two horns. It was apparently removed from the game due to balance concerns ([http://www.siliconera.com/2018/05/03/pikachu-originally-second-evolution-called-gorochu-large-fangs-two-horns/ source]).
Guy responds that his Kadabra evolved!

== References ==
For the English version, they took the Pokémon from Red/Green, seeing as how the dialogue came from Blue. The man says that the Raichu evolved, since you traded him a Raichu instead of a Kadabra on the other games."
