There have been so-called glitches that are merely myths, though often fallen for. Common examples are rumors of certain glitches deleting save files and also "secret" Pokémon (commonly called Pokégods).

MissingNo. erasing save files

A very common glitch myth is that if the player captures a MissingNo. or 'M, his or her save file will be erased. While glitchy occurances happen such as messed up graphics and messed up Hall of Fame data, they can not cause more significant damage to a save file such as erasing it (messed up graphics can be fixed by viewing the stats of a non-glitch Pokémon).

Pokégod rumors

Pokégod rumors are rumors of "secret" Pokémon, often in the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions of Pokémon. Common rumors include talking to Professor Oak a number of times earning the player a "Pokégod". Also, fake cheats involving hidden non-glitched maps, HMs above HM05, and happenings unfitting to the Pokémon series (e.g. Professor Oak giving the player a slap in the face) usually fall into this category, as they have no truth to them.

Receiving Mew without means of a glitch

There have also been rumors about people being able to receive Mew without a game-altering device or the Ditto or Mew Trick. The most common rumor involves talking to the man that gives the player a diploma after having all 150 Pokémon. Some said this only worked in the Japanese Versions of the games. Nevertheless, it is still false.

The grass to the west of Route 1

For years gamers have wondered what lies in that seemingly endless expanse of grass to the right and left of Route 1 that is impossible to reach. Some people think that the player can find Mew or glitch Pokémon there. Others think there's a secret area beyond the grass. In reality, the game freezes when the player enters that grass, as there is actually nothing there. The game freezes when the player goes beyond the boundaries in Glitch City, and it freezes for the same reason when entering the grass past the fence in Route 1.
