The Pewter Gym skip glitch is a natural glitch in RB. ItIn wasYellow, fixedthe innatural Yellowtriggering method was fixed, but existsa assimilar aeffect glitchcan techniquestill inbe thistriggered versionby forexploiting the Safari Zone exit glitch.

This glitch allows the player to skip the first gym by exploiting an error with the male NPC ("the Youngster") which allows the player to move him off screen. It is the easiest known way of setting up the walk through walls glitch "Brock Throughthrough Wallswalls" in Red and Blue.

The first two methods of pulling the glitch off were fixed in non-English European localizations of RB.

There are three known methods for triggering the Pewter Gym skip glitch. The first two methods are minor variations of each other, both relying on an oversight in the Youngster's script that allows the player to save the game in the middle of the script. The third method relies on the Safari Zone exit glitch. <!-- Is it even reasonable to consider the "natural" method and the Safari Zone method as the same glitch? -->

Walking in front of the Youngster method
#Open the START menu and move the arrow to "SAVE", then exit the menu by pressing B.
#Try to enter Route 3, making the male NPCYoungster speak to you.
#Once he says "Follow me!", press B to end the conversation and immediately press the START button. The menu cursor will be frozen, which is why moving the arrow to "SAVE" is a necessary step.
#Save the game. If the game is not reset the player will walk to the gym alone.
#Restart the game.
#The boyYoungster will disappear, walk in from the left, then begin talking again.
#He will still insist on taking the player to the gym, but will walk there oddly.
#Go back to the entrance to Route 3, and walk directly past the top spot where the boy used to be standing.

Walking two tiles away from the Youngster
#Open the START menu and move the arrow to "SAVE", then exit the menu by pressing B.
#Try to enter Route 3, making the NPCYoungster speak to you.
#Once he says "Follow me!", press B to end the conversation and immediately press the START button. The menu cursor will be frozen, which is why moving the arrow to "SAVE" is a necessary step.
#Save the game. If the game is not reset the player will walk to the gym alone and the NPCYoungster will reappear in his original spot.
#The text which normally appears after the NPCYoungster has finished taking the player to Pewter Gym will come up, but the NPCYoungster may disappear and the player is free to walk to Route 3.

Safari Zone method
For this method, the player must have made it up to at least Fuchsia City without defeating Brock. This is possible with one of the aforementioned methods.

This method is also possible in Yellow if Pewter Gym is skipped with a '"wrong warp'". For example, a traded Ditto with "-" as the first move may be used to set up the expanded items pack by using Missingno. to duplicate the sixth item by 128 and then 255 (by tossing the quantity to 127) first. After the expanded items pack is enabled, manipulating the quantity of item 36 (representing the memory address D364).

#Perform the steps of the Safari Zone exit glitch.
#Land the final Safari Zone step in the middle of the NPCYoungster's path to Pewter Gym.
#The player will be warped to the Safari Zone gate and stepping down will warp the player to the door of Pewter City Poké Mart.
#The NPCYoungster may start walking back to his original spot. If the player is quick, they can make it to Route 3 before he gets back to his original position. Alternatively, if the player saves the game and resets, it may cause the NPCYoungster to walk down; making the glitch much easier.
