Pewter Gym skip glitch | Walk through walls trick (Youngster method)

(view, talk, edit)

The Pewter Gym skip glitch is a natural glitch in Pokémon Red and Blue. It was fixed in Yellow, but exists as a glitch technique in this version for the Safari Zone exit glitch.

This glitch allows the player to skip the first gym by exploiting an error with the male NPC which allows the player to move him off screen. It is the easiest known way of setting up the walk through walls glitch "Brock Through Walls" in Red and Blue.

At least one of the methods of the glitch were fixed in the Spanish version.[clarification needed]

There are three known methods for exploiting the Pewter Gym skip glitch.

Requirements

Walking in front of the Youngster method

  1. Open the START menu and move the arrow to "SAVE", then exit the menu by pressing B.
  2. Try to enter Route 3, making the male NPC speak to you.
  3. Once he says "Follow me!", press B to end the conversation and immediately press the START button. The menu cursor will be frozen, which is why moving the arrow to "SAVE" is a necessary step.
  4. Save the game. If the game is not reset the player will walk to the gym alone.
  5. Restart the game.
  6. The boy will disappear, walk in from the left, then begin talking again.
  7. He will still insist on taking the player to the gym, but will walk there oddly.
  8. Go back to the entrance to Route 3, and walk directly past the top spot where the boy used to be standing.

Safari Zone method

For this method, the player must have made it up to at least Fuchsia City without defeating Brock. This is possible with one of the aforementioned methods.

This method is also possible in Pokémon Yellow if Pewter Gym is skipped with a 'wrong warp'. For example, a traded Ditto with "-" as the first move may be used to set up the expanded items pack by using Missingno. to duplicate the sixth item by 128 and then 255 (by tossing the quantity to 127) first. After the expanded items pack is enabled, manipulating the quantity of item 36 (representing the memory address D364).

  1. Perform the steps of the Safari Zone exit glitch.
  2. Land the final Safari Zone step in the middle of the NPC's path to Pewter Gym.
  3. The player will be warped to the Safari Zone gate and stepping down will warp the player to the door of Pewter City Poké Mart.
  4. The NPC may start walking back to his original spot. If the player is quick, they can make it to Route 3 before he gets back to his original position. Alternatively, if the player saves the game and resets, it may cause the NPC to walk down; making the glitch much easier.
