The Select glitch is a quirk within the Japanese versions of Generation 1 (not including Pocket Monsters Pikachu) that allows the player to swap entries in one menu with an entry from another, such as swapping an item with a Pokemon's move. This glitch was fixed in Pocket Monsters Pikachu and all overseas versions of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. This trick is often used in tool-assisted runs of Pocket Monsters to get items or Pokemon early, usually to get the setup necessary to perform Arbitrary code execution.
Uses and variations of the Select glitch include:
- Closed menu Select glitch (Examples: dokokashira door glitch, fossil conversion glitch, Trainer mutation glitch).
- Special menu Select glitch (Examples: Cerulean City badge man entry swapping, Silph Co. elevator entry swapping).
