Another way to get a bad clone in BGB emulator in English Pokémon Gold, Crystal is to do it with five Pokémon deposited into box 4, set a breakpoint for de=AD6D (Gold) or de=AD11 (Crystal), and then reset the game when the breakpoint is hit.
