Sometimes, unused remnants of unused Pokémon can be found in games.

Generation III

According to multiple sources, the two gen IV Pokémon known as Shellos and Gastrodon were at some point planned to be in generation III at some point.

In an inteview with Ken Sugimori, Sugimori mentioned that Shellos and Gastrodon were indeed originally planned for Ruby and Sapphire, but due to time constraints, they were not included in the finished version.

With the use of special debugging software, unused cries can be found in the game.

Generation IV

Hidden within the code of Diamond and Pearl is a backsprite presumably belonging to Gastrodon, along with one for Shellos.

Along with the backsprites for Shellos and Gastrodon, there are a multitude of other sprites, belonging to Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, and Manaphy.
