User:Evie (Torchickens)/Transform buffer overflow glitch

The Transform buffer overflow glitch occurs in Pokémon Gold and Silver whenever a Pokémon transforms into a ?????. It is probably due to those glitch Pokémon's internal sprite dimensions like how they force a link battle when encountered in the wild (even though the sprite is restricted to the typical reasonably sized looking variant).

The effects aren't constant. Like CoolTrainer♀ it seems there is room for manipulation, but the specifics aren't known.

Unfortunately the forced Link Battle mode (causing a softlock on waiting...) or a Glitch Dimension may prevent this glitch from having any practical use (although it is another way of activating one, and it hasn't been checked if it causes any mailbox glitches/Trainer House corruptions yet).

The Pokémon that used Transform keeps its original sprite, yet a corruption occurs; i.e. the nickname of the user's Pokémon on the field, the opposing Ditto's HP becomes corrupted and burned etc.

The glitch occurs with all ????? (00, FC, FE and FF). The glitch does not occur with Generation II glitch Egg. Though the glitch Egg has a glitch back sprite (problematic in Gold causing a Glitch Dimension), if the Pokémon Transforms into one it will take a new Egg front sprite.

Steps

  • Get a ????? with any of the possible methods.
  • Encounter Ditto on Route 34.
  • Have it Transform into ?????
