Presuming that the player has recently started a New Game, in Pokémon Green, after switching Oak's Parcel with the first Pokémon various bytes will be 'shuffled' including one which will make Professor Oak appear outside Pallet Town and importantly a combination of bytes making the next warp relevent to a particular number of steps the player has taken.

The doko kashira door glitch is one which only exists in the Japanese versions of the Pokémon games; collectively known as Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. It is actually a variation of many glitches known as Select bugs and is arguably the most well known across Japan with over one million views for the original Youtube video.

Specifically, the doko kashira door glitch involves the manipulation of the location of where the next door (or entrance) will take the player to. Although it is less well known outside of Japan, several competitive players have used this glitch for Speed Running videos for Pokémon Green, because through careful planning one could manipulate the warp of the next door to take him or her into the Hall of Fame room. Some of these Speed Running videos show players whom have completed Pokémon Green in a time as early as 5 minutes or less.

This glitch no longer exists in the non-Japanese versions of the Generation I Pokémon games; namely Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow because it involved the player using the Select button to switch Pokemon as well as items; this feature was removed in Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow and non-Japanese versions of Pokémon Red most likely due to the fact that if the player attempts to switch a Pokémon with an item he or she could temporarily alter the values of important bytes within the game until it is turned off, or less commonly corrupt the game's save file.

Explanation

Beyond the legitimate number of Pokémon slots (which can range from one to six), data exists which corresponds to particular information for other bytes within the game. This glitch can potentially dangerous like the Tweaking glitch on Pokémon Diamond and Pearl if it performed incorrectly because the Doko-Kashira Door Glitch essentially involves the player 'shuffling' other in game data which can virtually include information from all 8192 bytes within the game. This glitch involes the player switching the second item (Oak's Parcel) before the first badge with the first Pokémon so that data for the next Pokémon warp can be manipulated to match with a relevant number of extra steps that the player moves. This effect becomes permanent until the game is turned off.

Technically speaking, when the player attempts to switch a Pokémon with an item it is identical to switching around particular Pokémon past the sixth slot, or the amount of Pokémon the player should usually have, this is because data for these Pokémon past the usual slot are not legitimate Pokémon, but rather they correspond to other data within the game, for example the location of the player, how many gym badges he or she has and so on. If the player performs this glitch past a particular part of the game or uses an item other than Oak's Parcel it can have very different effects, but Oak's Parcel particularly corresponds to data which allow the player to be able to change the location of the next warp depending on the amount of extra steps he or she moves.

Since the ability to switch items was removed in Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow this glitch is only available in the Japanese version of Pokémon Red, and Pokémon Green.

Requirements (to access the Hall of Fame room)

  1. A Japanese version of Pokémon Red, or Pokémon Green.
  2. Willingess to start a New Game to perform the ideal method; this is optional, however if the player uses his or her existing Save File it is extremely difficult to find another method because this glitch can potentially alter any byte within the game, if some bytes have been written a value other than 00 this could potentially crash the game if these bytes are shuffled.
  3. No other requirements are necissary, as items will be obtained when performing the glitch.

An ideal method (to warp to the Hall of Fame) in a short amount of time

  1. The player needs to start a New Game if he or she has already delivered Oak's Parcel.
  2. The player can withdraw a Potion from the PC, so that he or she has one item.
  3. Walk out of the door, then proceed into the tall grass and wait until Professor Oak takes the player into his lab.
  4. Choose any starter Pokémon.
  5. After Gary chooses his Pokémon, attempt to leave Professor Oak's lab.
  6. Either defeat or lose to Gary and then proceed out of the lab and through the grass on the way to Pewter Town.
  7. Proceed to the Pokémart (known as 'SHOP' in Pokémon Green and many other Japanese versions of the Pokémon games) and recieve Oak's Parcel.
  8. The player should proceed back to Pallet Town but ensure that he or she enters a wild Pokémon battle on the way.
  9. The player needs to move to the Items option and use the Select button on Oak's Parcel.
  10. Select 'Cancel' and then select 'PKMN'.
  11. The cursor should still be white, choose the Starter Pokémon to switch it with Oak's Parcel.
  12. Check the Starter Pokémon's moves on the 'Fight' screen, to check that the game has not altered any undesirable bytes.
  13. If the Starter Pokémon's moves have not been changed run from the Pokémon battle and then walk exactly 73 steps, landing the last step in Gary's house in Pallet Town.
  14. The player should be near the house where HM02 Fly is normally obtainable, walk another 5 steps to the right and the move down so that it appears as if the player is attempting to move through the house's ceiling, it is the spot one step north of its right hand corner.
  15. The player should appear in the northern section of the Cycling Road House, walk 9 steps and aim the last step to be through the exit to the north-east corner.
  16. Walk an extra 45 steps eastwards aim the last step to be through the double doors of Celadon Department Store (the door to the right.)
  17. The player should now be in a glitched version of the Hall of Fame room.
