Pewter Gym skip glitch | Walk through walls trick (Youngster method)

(view, talk, edit)

Bulbapedia also has an article about Pewter Gym skip glitch.

The Pewter Gym skip glitch is a natural glitch in Pokémon Red and Blue. In Pokémon Yellow, the natural triggering method was fixed, but a similar effect can still be triggered by exploiting the Safari Zone exit glitch.

This glitch allows the player to skip the first gym by exploiting an error with the male NPC ("the Youngster") which allows the player to move him off screen. It is the easiest known way of setting up the walk through walls glitch "Brock through walls" in Red and Blue.

The first two methods of pulling the glitch off were fixed in non-English European localizations of Pokémon Red and Blue.

Requirements

  • The player must not have beaten the first gym (for the Safari Zone method, they must have skipped the gym with another glitch, such as expanded item pack manipulation).

Methods

There are three known methods for triggering the Pewter Gym skip glitch. The first two methods are minor variations of each other, both relying on an oversight in the Youngster's script that allows the player to save the game in the middle of the script. The third method relies on the Safari Zone exit glitch.

Walking in front of the Youngster method

  1. Open the START menu and move the arrow to "SAVE", then exit the menu by pressing B.
  2. Try to enter Route 3, making the Youngster speak to you.
  3. Once he says "Follow me!", press B to end the conversation and immediately press the START button. The menu cursor will be frozen, which is why moving the arrow to "SAVE" is a necessary step.
  4. Save the game. If the game is not reset the player will walk to the gym alone.
  5. Restart the game.
  6. The Youngster will disappear, walk in from the left, then begin talking again.
  7. He will still insist on taking the player to the gym, but will walk there oddly.
  8. Go back to the entrance to Route 3, and walk directly past the top spot where the boy used to be standing.

Walking two tiles away from the Youngster

If the game is not reset the player will walk to the gym alone and the Youngster will reappear in his original spot.
  5. The text which normally appears after the Youngster has finished taking the player to Pewter Gym will come up, but the Youngster may disappear and the player is free to walk to Route 3.

Safari Zone method

For this method, the player must have made it up to at least Fuchsia City without defeating Brock. This is possible with one of the aforementioned methods.

This method is also possible in Pokémon Yellow if Pewter Gym is skipped with a "wrong warp". For example, a traded Ditto with "-" as the first move may be used to set up the expanded items pack by using Missingno. to duplicate the sixth item by 128 and then 255 (by tossing the quantity to 127) first. After the expanded items pack is enabled, manipulating the quantity of item 36 (representing the memory address D364).

  1. Perform the steps of the Safari Zone exit glitch.
  2. Land the final Safari Zone step in the middle of the Youngster's path to Pewter Gym.
  3. The player will be warped to the Safari Zone gate and stepping down will warp the player to the door of Pewter City Poké Mart.
  4. The Youngster may start walking back to his original spot. If the player is quick, they can make it to Route 3 before he gets back to his original position. Alternatively, if the player saves the game and resets, it may cause the Youngster to walk down; making the glitch much easier.
