Special Area is a map register of hexadecimal identifier C4 (196), which only exists within the third generation of handheld Pokémon games. This map register does not appear within the original Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but does exist within Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, as well as Pokémon Emerald.

The identifier C4 (196) denotes a location just after the last Sevii Island location; Ember Spa. This may suggest Special Area as a placeholder for a possible removed map location; perhaps based in the Sevii Islands. Alternatively, 'Special Area' may be used as a function, similar to how the map register 'SPECIAL' sets the player's map location to the last area that he or she visited on Pokémon Gold and Silver.
